Autonomous On-Site Earth Impact Printing
Mobile autonomous construction machines that portion and fire excavated soil at high velocity to deposit compacted earthen layers in place, enabling multi-metre structures to be built directly from site material without extrusion, formwork or imported binders.
Developed mainly in: SwitzerlandImpacting: North America, Europe and Middle East & Africa
ETH Zurich researchers mounted a custom impact-printing tool on the HEAP autonomous walking excavator, letting it portion and fire dense pre-mixed excavated soil at high speed to build structures. Scan-matching localisation and trajectory tracking drove pre-planned fabrication paths, and the team completed a three-metre-tall unreinforced demonstrator using locally dug material.
