Magnetised Target Fusion Compression
Mechanically or liquid-metal compressing a pre-magnetised plasma target to fusion conditions, offering a middle path between magnetic and inertial confinement with cheaper drivers.
Developed mainly in: Canada and United KingdomImpacting: North America and Europe
General Fusion reported that its Lawson Machine 26 device compressed a magnetized plasma to electron temperatures above 12.6 million degrees Celsius (1.1 keV), measured by Thomson scattering just before peak compression. The UK Atomic Energy Authority co-authored the technical paper, now submitted for peer review, making this the first magnetized target fusion approach to pass 1 keV.
