Engineered supports and atomically dispersed active sites let electrolysis catalysts match commercial platinum current densities with a fraction of the noble-metal content, cutting precious-metal intensity without sacrificing stack performance.

Developed mainly in: South KoreaImpacting: North America, Europe, China and Rest of Asia

A KAIST-led group under Professor Jinwoo Lee, with KRICT, KBSI and Konkuk University, engineered an 'atom-layer neighbor' catalyst in which three to four ruthenium atoms act cooperatively. In water electrolysis it delivered hydrogen output comparable to a commercial platinum catalyst while using a quarter of the precious metal loading.
