The European Space Agency has an ongoing activity, DOMI, to build and test a prototype on-board software-defined networking module for satellites. Rather than relying on packet flags for simple prioritisation, the switch itself enforces network segmentation, traffic segregation and resource isolation, so a compromise at payload or ground level does not expose all services.
