Quantum And Low-Dimensional Electronic Materials
Atomically thin, stacked and strongly correlated crystals whose stacking, twist, strain or dimensionality is engineered deliver superconductivity, magnetism, ferroelectricity, single-photon emission and neuromorphic or high-power device behaviour not available in bulk solids.
Developed mainly in: United States and ChinaImpacting: North America, Europe and China
A multi-institution Chinese team led by Peking University's Liu Kaihui has developed a scalable method to grow high-purity rhombohedral (ABC-stacked) graphene at unprecedented sizes. This stacking configuration enables superconductivity and the quantum anomalous Hall effect, making it viable for noise-resistant topological qubits — previously blocked by the material's thermodynamic instability.
