Solid-State Spin and Charge Qubits
Qubits encoded in spins and charges hosted by semiconductors, diamond defects or electrons on helium allow quantum processors to be fabricated with lithographic manufacturing and, in some cases, run without deep cryogenics.
Developed mainly in: United States, Switzerland and GermanyImpacting: North America, Europe and China
Engineers have demonstrated a portable quantum computer using nitrogen-vacancy defects in diamond, capable of operating at room temperature without cryogenic cooling. The device plugs into a standard power outlet, removing a major barrier to real-world quantum deployment. This marks a departure from superconducting qubit systems requiring near-absolute-zero conditions.
