Ligand-Programmed Nanoparticle Superlattices
Tuning connector-molecule flexibility and particle size to set the number and direction of bonds between nanoparticles, enabling nanoparticles to be assembled like atoms into ordered crystalline superlattices with predetermined symmetry for photonic, catalytic and biomedical functions.
Developed mainly in: United StatesImpacting: North America, Europe, Rest of Asia and China
MIT researchers report a method for steering how nanoparticles bond into ordered superlattices by using pliable connector molecules rather than rigid linkers. Varying nanoparticle diameter and ligand chain length set the number and direction of bonds between neighbouring particles, opening routes to engineered structures for photonics, catalysis, medicine and agriculture.
